Growing up Emilya was insecure about her appearance, especially being influenced by the media where the “ideal” body type is defined. She was also heavily affected by her mother and during her early years, she was preoccupied with looking skinny and stressing about not getting “fat”, thus ending up in slimming centres and consuming diet pills to lose weight. This all resulted in Emilya’s perception that one has to be skinny to be beautiful. What she failed to see was the constant depression and obsession that her mother faced. At a young age, she started following her mother’s path of trying restrictive diets with her limited knowledge, which led to an unhealthy relationship with food and malnutrition.

What’s more, Emilya was not athletic or involved in any sports – working out or exercising wasn’t part of her lifestyle and she didn’t see the importance of it. Strength training was foreign to her and she had the perception that it was only for men. She was also intimidated by people who had the physique and capabilities to execute the strength exercises. This led to feelings of low self-esteem and that it was impossible to achieve her goals. Thus, Emilya obtained her diploma to further her knowledge in proper nutrition and ways to achieve a healthy lifestyle. During this time, her interest in the fitness industry also grew as she gained deeper knowledge in exercise concepts. Emilya started exercising and incorporating both endurance and strength training in her workouts, as she gained the confidence to utilise the gym and execute the exercises. She also had the opportunity to train clients with different needs as part of her assignment. Since then, her mindset changed – exercise and nutrition are no longer intimidating and foreign. Emilya also applied her acquired knowledge with her loved ones, especially her mother who is now content with her appearance and has stopped relying on strict diets.

After Emilya graduated from polytechnic, she decided to get herself a certification in personal training and work in a gym where she could interact with female clients of different age groups. As a personal trainer, she hopes to inspire others and share her knowledge in order to help them achieve their fitness and overall health goals. She also aspires to train people from different backgrounds and design various training programmes so that she can expand her knowledge.
